Childhood/Early Career -
Blake William was born on November 28, 1757 in London, England one of seven children. As a child he said he saw visions and prophecies, and later revolved his work around those visions and prophecies. When he was only 4 years old he saw Gods face appear in a window, and some people say he saw the prophet Ezekiel. His first vision, at the age of 10 was of a tree full of angels. His family wasn't very wealthy so his parents put him in school for a very short period of time, but by the time he was 10 he had already been enrolled in the Henry Pars's drawing school because his artistic ability was already very well. In the school he sketched the human figure by copying from plaster casts of ancient statues, and by 14 he was the apprentice of an engraver. Later William was sent to Westminster Abbey to make drawing of tombs and monuments, where his love of Gothic art became bigger. By the time he was 21 he had finished his 7 years of apprenticeship, ready to become a journeyman copy engraver and soon start his painting career. In 1779 he was admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts Schools of Design and began selling some of his own works in 1780.
Influences on Poet -
The biggest influence on his writing was the bible. William was a very religious man, and focused much of his writing on that part of him. He wrote and produced art about his visions and prophecies. When William was 30 his brother, Robert died of tuberculosis, that being one of the most terrible things he experienced and a huge influence on his poetry. He also was angry and astonished at the amount of injustice, war and unhappiness contaminating the world, so he decided to focus some of his writing on that.
World Events -
During his lifetime America was still trying to become independent, so a few years before he was born in 1773 the Boston Tea Party took place. Then 2 years later the American War of Independence began and ended in 1783, when William was 6 years old. In 1789 George Washington became the first president of the free country, and the French Revolution began. 10 years later ending when William was 22.
Impact on Literature/Traits of Poetry -
Blake Williams strongly believed in understanding yourself and your instincts, energies and imaginations them being the most important parts of you. You should know who you are so that you could use your artistic imagination to sculpt and mold the newly forming world. He wrote about complete opposites, like good and evil, heaven and hell, knowledge and innocence and external reality versus internal. It's hard to say his writing was mainly about one subject. Although he lived in London most of his life he impacted writers, artists, and musicians all around the world.
